You're looking at the next generation of professional and compassionate youth workers!

On Friday 16th and Saturday 17th of March we kicked off our 2012 Certificate IV in Youth Work course in the training room of the Oasis Youth Support Network Sydney. The above picture shows Jodie Mills, team leader at Oasis Hunter, teaching and training our newest batch of youth workers!

The class is 28 people strong and is made up of a varitety of ages, culltural backgrounds and experiences! There's people who've just finished high school, others who've deferred a year at university, still others who've built successful careers but who feel God calling them in another direction, others who are already working in the field but seeking further training, and even a few who have been the receipients of love and care from compassionate persons and who are now in a place where they want to be equipped to do the same for others!

The class is a true picture of the diversity and richness that is the Kingdom of God! We're beyond excited at the shared passion and energy that is in the room and can't wait to continue the journey with the group.

If you missed out on a spot in this years Certificate IV in Youth Work course then don't stress out. Apply today for our 2013 intake and secure your enrolment today!

We're stoked to announce that due to popular demand Brisbane STUMP will be back on in 2012!

Dates have been finalised and are from Tuesday 25th - Saturday 29th September!

STUMP (stands for Short Term Urban Mission Project) is an amazing opportunity for you to live, train and work with the Salvo's for a week and encounter poverty in your city first-hand. STUMP isn't a holiday, church camp or retreat. It exists to give your youth, church, team, class and/or corps groups the chance to encounter Biblical justice and mission first-hand, where Matthew 25:31-40 becomes a reality, not just words on a page!

In the words of Samantha Lynch a former Brisbane STUMP Participant:

"Spending a week working along side the people and organisations who are bringing hope into so many people's lives was one of the best weeks of my life. It changes you. You begin to see things differently, see people differently. And when I went home, that week and the people that I met didn't stay in Brisbane. Rather, they came with me. Forever challenging me, confronting me and changing how I live my life. Never before have the words 'I have seen, I am responsible', been so real."

So, are you ready to be challenged at changed? Then apply for Brisbane STUMP here.

You can also view our 2010 Brisbane STUMP 2010 video here.

Check out the awesome new Edify Internship promo video made by our good friend Mark Tipple - mate you're both a scholar and a gentleman! If you've got a few minutes to spare today grab a cup of tea / coffee and be inspired and filled with hope as you hear the stories of three radical young people who completed our 2011 Edify Internship, Krystle Walters, Ibrahim Faraj and Sonya Orr.

Some sweet quotes from the clip:

"You open one door and there's five more doors to open up ... everything that's happend this year has been on faith and my greatest lesson is just trust and have faith in God and He'll provide"

"I expected it to be tough but it's been amazingly rewarding and probably so much more rewarding than I ever though it would have been"

"I guess it (Edify) put a framework around how you can live life like ... a community sensed life"

"Coming here and entering into some mentoring relationships this year I was really able to find out what my giftings are"

"I found I've really grown in patience ... this year has shown me things won't go how I expect ... they'll go at God's pace"

"I've definitely changed in myself, I'm not the same person that I was yesterday, nor a week ago or six months ago cause God has really presented different moments of healing in my life and different experiences, from those experiences it's built me to be stronger"

Happy New Years from the team at Edify !!

Was one of your resolutions to go deeper in your relationship with God and to go on a new adventure. Then the perfect way to start your year would be by joining the team on January STUMP and spending a week living at an inner-city Salvation Army centre and see poverty and injustice with your own eyes.

What is STUMP?

STUMP stands for Short Term Urban Mission Project. It's a week of serving and doing life with some of Australia's most poor and marginalised people.

For a week you'll live in the heart of the inner city and will have the chance to be hands-on with the work the Salvos are doing every day - helping in a community centre, visiting local residents, working alongside at-risk young people, and simply being a friend to people forgotten by the rest of society.

You'll also get relevant teaching and training in areas such as homelessness, mental health issues, alcohol and other drug abuse, boundaries and suicide intervention and prevention. On top of that, you'll get to witness how faith in Jesus plays a vital part in The Salvation Army's response to these issues.

You'll experience a side of our country you've never seen before, and will come away impacted, challenged and equipped to start making a difference when you get back home.

When is STUMP and how much does it cost?

The next STUMP Program is in Sydney from Sunday 15th - Saturday 21st January. Individuals are asked to make a $250 contribution.

2012 Edify Internship - Give a Year, Get a Life!

Recruiting now!

The faces above are of the 2011 Edify Inters after 10 months of living, serving and growing in the inner city of Sydney. In the words of one intern "I'd been thinking about doing something for a while, and it was once I got back ... I decided now was the time ... I'd finished my apprenticeship and I wanted a whole new life ... I didn't want to do something that was for myself, I wanted to do something greater than me ... If you want to grow, if you want to strengthen that relationship with God, and if you want to live for Him get on board and see where He leads you".

We've already filled 3 of the Intern places for our 2012 program, should your face be amongst this year's team?

Give a year, get a life ...

The Edify Internship is one of The Salvation Army's newest cutting-edge initiatives, combining a gap-year program, accredited training in Youth & Community Work and a real-life Salvation Army urban centre into a 10-month experience that will change your life.

If you're looking to kick-start your career in professional youth work or are just wanting a completely new experience between high school and university, the Edify Internship is just what you're looking for.

A gap year that actually takes you somewhere!

Participants in the Edify Internship spend 10 months living, studying and volunteering at The Salvation Army's Streetlevel Mission, an urban church and welfare centre located in Surry Hills (inner-city Sydney).

You'll have the privilege of meeting, making friends with and serving some of Sydney's most disadvantaged and needy people, gaining insight into urban community life and being empowered and equipped to make a difference. Streetlevel isn't just a centre, it's a faith community, and you'll get to see how faith in Jesus is at the very heart of The Salvation Army.

During the 10 months you'll complete a nationally recognised Certificate IV in Youth OR Community Work, which means you'll be qualified for a job iaround the country upon completion. Plus, the experience you'll gain throughout the year will give you a headstart on other job seekers when it comes to your resume and job interviews.

Even if you're not planning on a career in social and community services, the Edify Internship is a challenging and rewarding opportunity for personal growth that you won't find anywhere else. And unlike most gap year programs, the nationally-recognised qualification means you could be able to tap into financial support options such as Austudy.

Where do I sign up?

Think your face belongs in the Edify 2012 Internship team photo!

Congratulations 2011 Interns!

On Friday 9th December the Streetlevel community, family and friends gathered to celebrate the graduating Edify Interns of 2011. Matt, Luke, Brenton, Krystle, Simon, Rochelle, Jess, Emma, Ibrahim, Sonya and Alex each stood and shared their highlights from community, what Jesus had been teaching across the year and where in the Scriptures they had been most ministered to by God.

After each Intern shared a member of the community jumped to their feet and blessed them with a gift before praying for them. There were tears and emotion as many of the Interns shared, and roars of laughter as Sean referred to Sonya as a young Sarah Ferguson (and Ibi as a young Dr King!). The presence of God was truly felt by all as we honoured the call to God's mission that the Interns had embraced that year.

The message that the Holy Spirit continued to impress across the night was from the Book of Isaiah Chapter 61 Verses 1-3.

The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners,
to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor
and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn,
and provide for those who grieve in Zion—
to bestow on them a crown of beauty
 instead of ashes,
the oil of joy
 instead of mourning,
and a garment of praise
instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
 a planting of the LORD
for the display of his splendor.

We thank God for our 2011 Intern family and pray His best for them as they continue their journey with the Lord, some choosing to stay with the Streetlevel / Oasis community, others returning to their homes to serve there. We'll post more updates soon to help you stay up to speed with them!

In the mean time we're currently recruiting for our 2012 Edify Internship, are you up for the challenge?

Dwayne Pitts - STUMP 2009

Hi my name is Dwayne and what can I say about STUMP? Maybe I should say what can't I say about STUMP!

It was a non stop thrill ride, working with an awesome group of other young Christians, and experiencing the power of God's love and how He works differently through people, but brings them together to serve Him, and to teach them.

We journeyed through the week, and it was an experience that has truly changed my life for the better and I will never forget it. Having the opportunity to share in community with people, and hearing their stories, and just being able to meet different people.

It was so incredible just being able to spend some time every lunchtime, talking and engaging with different members of the community. Sharing in what was happening in their lives, without passing judgement, and seeing the way they warmed to having new people in the community that were willing to talk to them, but not only that and possibly more importantly, listen to what they had to say.

Doing the street walk on Wednesday night would have to be the highlight of my week. Walking through the streets of Sydney and seeing the homeless people and the sex workers of all varieties was something that has altered my opinions of a lot of different people. I thought it was incredible when we were at the Mathew Talbot place and seeing all of the people watching the State of Origin. I had never seen that many disadvantaged and homeless people so close together and getting along before in my life.

Another highlight for me was definitely the visits we did to community members houses. Again being able to meet new people, and hearing their stories was incredible, but in this case it was almost on a more personal level because they were in their own home environment.

The biggest challenge of the week came on the Friday Night, a community member, who we had visited earlier in the week, was having a few problems, and had been admitted to hospital. He owned a dog that he cared for deeply, myself and a fellow STUMPer went to his house to retrieve his dog, but we couldn't get the door open because it was jammed shut. As hard as we tried the door wouldn't budge, I was extremely worried about the dog, as it had limited food and water, but thankfully Paul Moulds was able to get in the next day and the dog was safe. The community member is since out of hospital and seems to be doing a better. Praise God!

Overall it was an experience that I wish had never ended, but I am determined to make the most of the things that I learned out of it, and the friendships that I am blessed to have developed will last with me and through me forever. I thank God every day since STUMP for the experiences that I had during that week and the incredible experiences that I can see in my future as a result of it.

Daniel Robles - STUMP 2008

The names Daniel Robles, I'm 20 years old and am currently working for my mother's family business and plan to attend bible college in 2009 (and he did!).

I've grown up in a Christian family my whole 20 years of life but only truly made Jesus Christ my lord and saviour two years ago. I'm planted in New-Life church in prospect and am a youth leader for our youth group 'Contagious'. I would consider my three most significant life moments to be; my birth, my salvation and my week at STUMP...big call I know.

I came into STUMP with no ideas or expectations other then the fact that I was throwing my self into the deep end of the pool that is Christianity. I had no overwhelming desire to love, serve or show compassion. But before that week I did pray to God and said this, ' Lord all I want is to glorify you, all I want is to find you, all I want is to love you, all I want is to be one step closer to you, to be one step closer to really calling my self a Christian. Funny enough, that was all answered at my week at STUMP. My whole life of ministry had consisted of living out Matthew 22:39; "love your neighbour as yourself" within the context of my church. I realised the moment I started STUMP that it's so easy to love people as yourself when they are like you. But now I was faced with the challenge to do the same as I served in Street Level and Oasis and love those who were nothing like me.

The whole week was amazing and I continued to be overwhelmed as I lived out my Christianity in a completely different world to my own yet only a 45 minute drive away. I served, cleaned, painted and learnt about the poor and marginalised right here in Sydney.

Not just the financially poor but those who were poor spiritually and mentally. And not just those who were marginalised by society but also by the church. I remember the first night I went out on a coffee run. We basically drove around Kings Cross and the surrounding areas and served coffee and biscuits to people. I found my self serving and loving people that you would rarely find at your average church service. Instead of serving coffee and tea to my pastor and elders I was serving the homeless, sex workers, the drug and alcohol addicted.. And though it was so different It also felt so right, the judgements that were popping in my head were slowly being hushed by the love of God. The love of God that said, "Love your neighbour as yourself".

I left that week of STUMP and found everything I had been praying and searching God for. My understanding of Matthew 22:37-39 was changed completely. And I found God and his love outside of my church and in the least likely place.

Pip Yeats - STUMP 2009

Basically, I saw the movie 'The Oasis' last year on the ABC and was really inspired by what Paul, Robbin and Nathan Moulds along with the rest of the team at Oasis do everyday.

My friends and I found out that The Salvation Army ran a Short Term Urban Missions Project (STUMP) in Surry Hills for a week, which aimed to educate and create awareness about these issues. So we spent the week with the Salvos, participating in what they do everyday of the year, serving and doing life with some of the poor and marginalised of the inner city of Sydney, street kids, drug addicts, sex workers etc.

When I got home from that week in Sydney, I realised that there were a lot of volunteers on the Central Coast that worked at Donnison Street and other places that hadn't had the opportunity to get educated on the issues that many of the people we're serving have to face. So I decided to create Reach Out, a training day that aimed to bring together people passionate about helping others and equip and empower our community to help others in a more effective way. See below for how it all went!

SALVOS TALK STRIKES CLOSE TO HOME

By Terry Collins

WHEN Philippa Yeats organised a seminar on homelessness earlier this month, she was expecting about 30 people. Instead, she was overwhelmed when 140 people turned up to hear a presentation from the team at Sydney Oasis.

"It was really encouraging to see so many people from the Central Coast interested in finding out about more ways to help people who are marginalised within our communities," Ms Yeats said.

"Paul Moulds, Robbin Moulds and Nathan Moulds, of the Salvation Army at Surry Hills, gave really inspiring talks outlining practical ways to help and care for others. "They spoke on the topics of youth homelessness, community, mental health, alcohol and other drug abuse and boundaries."

Ms Yeats said people had expressed interest in volunteering and she was trying to connect organisations to volunteers.

I would love to just quit school and live there =]

Since STUMP I really know that I want to do counselling, which I need school for, lol, and hopefully I can use my skills to help out community members in my free time =]

I'm so grateful that I can now see the path I want to take ... and one that is purposeful and will help those who need it most. Thanks a lot to the STUMPy bunch for guiding me, dunno what I would've done without them, they really helped me see the light during tough times and drew me closer with God than I have ever been =]

I'm already telling all of my friends about STUMP, they aren't as interested as I was, but I assume they're a bit scared to step out of their comfort zones. So they should be. It was a challenge. But a challenge I'm so grateful to have been a part of!

Jared Woods - STUMP 2009

STUMP ... Where to begin?

Well STUMP is a short term urban mission project run at Streetlevel by the Salvation Army. It takes a group of young people, puts them in a totally foreign environment, so that they can be broken and changed. It challenges them to do things that they never thought they could or would ever do. It humbles them into believing that others are more important than themselves. Here's a day in the life at STUMP and even a conclusion to boot!

Day 4 (Wednesday)

Had a better sleep, though not the greatest. Today the men and women were separated. The women went to do some work at Samaritan House (homeless women's refuge). This involved painting the chapel and getting high on paint fumes! haha! They also connected with the community members. The men on the other hand had a different day. We started our day by meeting up with Tim from Hope Street at Wayside Chapel. He was leading a group of High School students around the city, showing them where all the services for homelessness are and a couple of other little things. They had already started when we joined them. We then hung out with Tim back at Hope Street. We had coffee with him and just listened to his story. This was interesting as it allowed us a place to connect. He then led us back to Crown Street and we made our way back home. The boys, except for me, thought it would be exciting to dance up Crown Street to Michael Jackson and the Bee Gees. This was thoroughly embarrassing. When we got back we had some lunch.

Then we went with Robbin to visit John at his house. This was really cool as we got to see Robbin in action. We also shared some things with John and we prayed with him at the end.

We got back at about 4pm-ish. With four hours to wait till our next event, it was a good time to just relax. At about 8pm we got ready to go on our night walk. Nathan took us on a thorough tour of the city. We got back at 1:30am! It was really good to see all the areas that people don't often see when they go to the city. Our first stop was near St Mary's Cathedral to get some dinner. We only missed the van by about 5-10 mins. We saw it leaving. Then a homeless man named Floyd led us up the stairs, where there was a group of schoolgirls from Mercy College giving out free coffee, hot chocolate, pizza and biscuits. Unfortunately we'd missed the pizza! There was also a band about to play. Floyd was excited to hear them. He told a few of us a bit about himself. We got to watch a bit of the State of Origin (football) in Wooloomooloo, as a couple from The Salvation Army had set up two tv's. There were about 20-30 people in front of the tv's and about another 60 in the adjacent area. IT was crazy to visit these areas where there was a high concentration of homelessness.

It was interesting walking through Kings Cross and Oxford Street. We got some dinner at the Wall. They had a few food vans a long this area, including a place where people can get a safe sex pack and free needles. We got introduced to the people that run this. The Wall is an area where there used to be a lot of male prostitution back in the day. It has gone a lot more underground now, but there are still a lot of homeless people there. Some very interesting characters! We got to see the legal injecting centre then we went to the base of SOS, which is an outreach service. This is where Nathan used to work. He told us a story about a lady that knew his mother. It was a crazy coincidence that they should meet. No more than twenty minutes later, but who should we run into, but this lady! It was quite insane. The last half an hour of the walk we spent homeless. We were all separated, with no mobiles, iPods or wallets. It was a simulation of what it would be like to live on the streets. Wednesday was a massive day and we were all massively challenged by what we saw on this day.

Conclusion

As you can see, STUMP involved many things. Some much stuff happened within this short week that, at times and due to lack of sleep, it was hard to process. I didn't realise the impact that it had on me until I got home and started recalling the things that had happened. So many challenging points. Here are a few of what I consider the most life changing and barrier breaking things that happened to me.

- STUMP opened my eyes to the injustice that is within our own city of Sydney, Australia. Even though Sydney is one of the wealthiest and well off cities in one of the most developed countries, there is still this injustice that happens. It blew me away that so many people are living on the streets, a lot of them using substances to cope. How can people be so ignorant? I know I used to walk past people passed out and judge them. Now I look to see if they are okay. Who knows, they could be dead or unconscious and no one would care ...

- Another change was that a few barriers were broken down. For example, when we were cleaning the house this fully challenged me. I am messy but I am clean. This house was so dirty, but apparently it wasn't even that bad. This challenged me, and also humbled me. We are called to do these things to love people, but until we actually do them, we don't realise how impacting they are. This definitely broke down a barrier for me.

- Just talking with people. I was able to open up with community members.Living with seven other people for a week was, at sometimes, a challenge. Luckily we all got along really well. Same heart, same vision, bad sentence structure. I also got to connect with a guy I used to go to school with.I know this is a simple thing, but my total approach to people and hanging out with people has changed.

I hope this has somewhat encouraged and challenged you. To really understand what happened though, you have to have done STUMP for yourself.

Talitha Connors - Intern 2009

This year did not have a great start, I'd lost my job due to that pesky economic downturn and it was nigh impossible to get another. So I prayed.

My mum told me about the Edify Internship in Surry Hills, and to begin with, I really wasn't interested. Moving to Sydney and working with homeless people was not what I had planned for this year. But as I prayed about it, I realised that as a Salvationist, God calls us to the darkest places to help those in need. I continued looking for a job, but applied for the internship as well.

A few weeks later, I was moving to Sydney. I was so scared. I'd never lived in the city before, and knew no one down here. But God has really blessed me since I have moved and started working in the community centre. I have met so many people I would never have even looked at before, and they are amazing. I get to serve these people, and just love upon them almost every day.

Sometimes serving in community is something as simple as sitting down and chatting with someone during lunch. It can also be as difficult as trying to find someone a bed for the night and getting knocked back at almost every turn because there are hardly any beds available.

Most of our community members just want someone to talk to, someone who will listen and make them feel valued. Yes, they need help with food, clothing and accommodation; but they also need help to reconnect with people.

I am so blessed that I have the opportunity to be a part of their lives and to share with them. We have some hectic times in our community, but there are many, many great ones as well.

I am learning so much about God through our community here, and am learning what God wants me to work on for myself: Fruits of the Spirit! Streetlevel makes you learn patience, and this is something I usually have very little of... I am blessed to have the opportunity to have it grow as I try and bring God's love to people who have never been shown love by anyone else. I can't wait to see what else God has planned for this year.

Genah Barnes - Intern 2009

Kia Ora! I'm Genah, I'm 19 years old and I'm from New Zealand. I did STUMP in April and now I'm doing the Edify Internship and I've been here for about 4 months now.

I'm really passionate about the last the lost and the least and since I've just come here I think things have changed a lot in my life. I see that the fruit in my life that God has grown the most since I've been here is love. I just see how God is teaching me to love so many different people.

One of my favourite moments from being here at Edify was when I was sitting at a table and there were all these people around me, some suffering from mental illness, some from homelessness and all sorts of different things and I remember thinking, this is the table Jesus sat at.

So will you be joining us!?

UPDATE (19/10/10) - After completing the Edify Internship Genah followed God's call on her life to Chang Rai in Thailand where she is now living and serving. We continue to stay in touch with her and pray for her every week!

UPDATE (10/12/11) - Genah is now living back in New Zealand undertaking studies to further equip herself to serve long time as an overseas missionary, we miss her a lot but continue to pray for her!

Was. Amazing. There is no other way to really describe it. It had everything one could ask for when serving for a week in Surry Hills: Love, Joy, Sadness, Drugs...and a home-made gypsy tent.

During the course of the week, we learnt to love on the community and on each other. We spent so much time in the community that we formed friendships which some of us are growing outside of STUMP. We also learnt how to love on the other team members, including those on the EDIFY internship. We became like a family, forged through common experience, a love for each other and the community and a desire to see the community member's lives being enriched everyday.

Joy was something that I know I experienced everyday, just knowing that I could be making a difference in someone's life. Even though a lot of the stuff I did was either disgusting or made me uncomfortable, I did it all with a smile on my face. I grew closer to God throughout the week, and I know that it was Him that gave me the joy in my heart, both then and now.

The Street Walk, which we did on Wednesday night, was confronting to say the least. I felt incredible sadness seeing all of these people, normal by any other standard except that they live on the streets and may have addictions. I was at a loss for words (which for anyone who knows me is hard to believe) at the poverty in Sydney, a city of world standing. We met a homeless guy, with a wicked sense of humour, even when he stepped on a rat, and in the shadow of St. Mary's Cathedral, one of the most majestic buildings in the city, was a coffee van serving this bloke and other homeless people. I was almost in tears at the splendour of the building above us, yet the seeming lack of funds to give these humans, children of God, a room and a decent meal everyday. It is a picture that haunts me still.

We were smashed everyday...on Christian Drugs: Prayer, Community and the Word of God. It was awesome to be so totally immersed in a community of such strong Christians, every STUMP is different, but the people you do it with make it really enjoyable.

Oh yeah, and that gypsy tent...it's generally not a good idea to leave a group of young people and a pile of sheets together in the one room :P

I would recommend this experience to everyone and anyone...it simply ruined my life, now I am actively trying to serve others, not myself, and I'm loving it!!!

I'm Kirilee, just your average teenage girl from Campsie, and I survived STUMP!

STUMP is a Short Term Urban Mission Project. It is run from The Salvation Army's Streetlevel Community Centre, in Surry Hills, in the heart of Sydney. The mission trip lasted only a week, but has left an everlasting imprint on my heart.

There were six of us staying at STUMP together. Most of us had never met before, so it was a great opportunity to meet other Christian young people who had a heart for the homeless. I learnt so much about myself through the five people God had sent to STUMP with me.

On the Tuesday of STUMP, we all headed out for a Street Walk. We had dinner at a food van, met plenty of homeless people and went to Kings Cross, which has the reputation of being Sydney's "red light district". I personally met a sex worker, who was one of the nicest people I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. She was lovely, and only working the streets because she didn't know how else to get money. It was so sad and eye opening.

The journey wasn't just about me; it was about the people who belong to the Streetlevel community, the people who had some amazing stories of hardship to tell. They taught me so much about what life is really about.

Going into STUMP I had a pretty rocky relationship with God; it'd be a good week if I remembered to pray, a miracle if I went a day without swearing. But now I'm proud to say that I pray every single day, even if it's just one sentence prayers. I'm getting better at biting my tongue and I'm living day to day, trying to be a better Christian. I really think that if this is something God wants you to do, don't put it off!

Contact the Edify team and secure your place at next holiday's STUMP. =)

Ariel Clark - STUMP 2009

Think about this picture. It's familiar right? That big cathedral in the city across from that park (St. Mary's Cathedral). We all know it.

There's a side to it I never saw. Under this cathedral there's a park, and in that park there lives homeless people. I know because I saw one peeing on a tree as I walked past one day last week. I went back a day later and there was this van set up, the Vinnies were giving tea and coffee and biscuits out beside their huge glittering cathedral to a community of displaced people who seemed to have emerged out of the darkness. It was feel good. But it was also ironic.

I had a lot of cups of tea that night as we walked around the city I thought I knew but had never really seen. Oxford street. The coke sign at the cross. The little park just next to the jewish museum. The world vision office. The bright strip of restaurants off crown street. I'd been there before. But I didn't ever see past the lights and music.

There's a strip called tranny lane where a person in bright red size 13 heels waited, his mouth covered with a veil. I never saw that. There's a bridge on the way down to Woolloomooloo where those who couldn't get a bed sleep in ruffled bunches of blankets and beanies. They called it the bridge hilton. I never saw that.

There's an injecting centre across from a club I once went to in the cross where addicts can safely use and stumble out the back to wait out their fortnight until the next pay and the next shoot up.

Near the City there's a quiet building masked in blue marble called Samaritan House. Inside are women who have seen hardship unlike anything I've ever experienced, who were displaced and powerless in this strange city and have now found a safe place. I met a woman there who was married in Cambodia to a man who brought her to Australia, where she was forced to work from 6am till 10pm everyday, not allowed to leave the house, made to sleep in the living room while her husband slept with his girlfriend in their bed. She had overcome the loss of her home, her family, her freedom and also lost a child, she had experienced all that and survived and she was only a few months older than me. We sat and drank tea together and we laughed about silly things, worlds apart but still the same.

Across from 'the wall' famous for male prostitution, I met a woman named sam outside a food van who was looking forward to going home and getting wasted she said. She said she wished she had a job. She picked at sores on her face constantly and was missing some teeth. I'd never met a person like her before last week. But she wasn't so different to me, she paints when she wants to forget and she loved to laugh.

There are people in this city that just get broken by life. I'm not ok with that. I learnt a million things last week, little bits of wisdom that I'll treasure for life. And a lot of them I learnt from these broken people.

One lady named Marie told me that there's a lot of people in the world that seem rough, but they might be angels in disguise. And that if I can be open to them and trust them then they will trust me. People aren't looking for handouts or pity or the occasional altruistic act. They don't even need people to understand their world and have had the same experiences. They need friends, they need brothers and sisters and mothers and fathers who are whole so that they can offer enough love and patience and unrelenting grace to start to mend brokenness.

I want to make it so that no kid ever ends up there in the broken dark corners of this city, and I want to be a place where kids can come to escape that darkness and become whole again. That's what I realised at STUMP and I hope that I carry that with me for the rest of my life.

Veronica Lee - STUMP 2009

Going into STUMP I was afraid. I hardly knew the people that I would be staying with. I was afraid to meet new people, afraid to be in an unfamiliar place but I knew that I wanted to be pushed out of my comfort zone.

In my time at STUMP, I got to meet so many wonderful people! Within moments of meeting, we all bonded instantly. The people in the community were so lovely. I felt privileged to be able to meet and serve such beautifully broken people and hear their stories.

The training was quite intense. We learnt about community, boundaries, homelessness and alcohol and other drug abuse. This really helped me to get informed on these issues and it was great that we could put our new knowledge to practical use.

The debriefing sessions also helped me to reflect on what I had learnt or experienced in the day and it was great hearing other people's thoughts as well.

Two of the highlights I would have to point out are; the day we spent at the Samaritan House. That was a great day, where we could just prepare lunch for the beautiful ladies, eat with them, pamper them and just talk and hang out with them. Hearing their stories was incredibly touching.

The other highlight would have to be the Streetlevel wedding. It was great being able to participate in the preparation of the wedding and having the opportunity to serve food and drinks to the community.

Something I learned from Robbin Moulds was that "there is no failure, only feedback." This has helped to shape my attitude towards situations and people.

The STUMP experience was nothing like I expected, definitely challenged me and changed my perspective, especially in regard to in those who are marginalized. I learnt a lot and am grateful for the chance to be involved in such a beautiful community.
