Youth Support Coordinator

The Youth Support Coordinator (YSC) works in secondary schools with young people who have been identified by their peers, teachers, parents or other persons involved as someone who is experience personal, relationship and/or family concerns, and may benefit from additional support.

The Youth Support Coordinator Initiative is run by the Department of Communities and the Department of Education, Training and the Arts to support young people aged between 12 and 18 years at risk of not completing secondary schools or an equivalent TAFE or training program.

To be eligible, young people must be enrolled in a formal Queensland secondary education or training program.

The initiative aims to:

  • Assist young people to develop social and personal skills for successful community living.
  • Encourage and support community services to be responsive to the needs of students and their families.
  • Develop networks within schools, TAFE, community organisations and the broader community that contribute to supportive school and TAFE environments.

 Youth Support Coordinators work to create supportive environments for learning, resolve issues that impact negatively on students' schooling and develop young people's social and personal skills.

The Youth Support Coordinator (YSC) may be able to provide you with some or all of the following services:

  • Being a listening ear
  • Offering support when you don't know who to turn to
  • Developing a plan to work on things that worry you
  • Helping you to develop skills for successful community living
  • Offering guidance in making choices and decisions
  • Providing supportive counselling
  • Referring you to specialist support if needed
  • Providing group activities exploring a range if youth identified issues
