5 tips for schoolies

Michael Peattie, a Psychiatric Nurse and advocate for having a good time sober, gives his top tips for schoolie-goers from his own experience.

I attended Schoolies on the Gold Coast when I was seventeen. Looking back, I recognise that there were many dangerous situations that I found myself in, but was not equipped to manage safely. Luckily I made it through, but unfortunately others have not been so lucky. I have seen firsthand the damage alcohol and drugs can inflict on one's life. I want Schoolies to read this and then make educated and wise decisions whilst away from their families and loved ones.

1.    Look after yourself
You are the most important person in the world. Treat yourself as such. Always be careful and think about what you are doing and your surroundings. If you feel uneasy about someone or a situation, trust your gut. Get out of there.

2.    Watch out for each other - be a team
Your friends are like family. You look out for family. Do the same with them. Work as a team. If you are planning to drink make sure one of you remains sober and that person can look out for the others.

3.    If you are concerned, call for help
Too many times people are afraid to call for help, particularly if they fear ridicule or getting themselves or their friends in trouble. However, if your friend looks unwell or you are simply concerned call 000 or the Red Frogs on 1300 557 123. It is better to be safe than sorry. Your actions might be the difference between life and death. Be on the safe side.

4.    Never go anywhere alone
This goes for both sexes but especially females. Always make sure you travel in a group that you has a mobile charged with contact details available. Let people know where you are going and what time you are expected to arrive.

5.    Enjoy yourself
This is an exciting time in your life. However, you don't need alcohol or drugs to have a good time. Just enjoy each other's company, the freedom, the sunshine and the moment. Take care everyone and please be safe.
