The Way Forward

2020 is not a just a new program; it is The Salvation Army’s map for the future. It includes:

  • Where we have come from – looking back and learning
  • Where we are at – being realistic and addressing the state of play
  • Where we are going – seeking God and being visionary
  • How we get there – planning and being strategic
  • Keeping on track – monitoring progress and continually realigning

The challenge of realising the Mission Priorities is an exciting one. One year into the journey of One Army One Mission/2020 - the foundation has been firmly established.

Local Mission Planning

After a period of reflection, local mission planning projects will be a high priority.

Self-assessment against the mission priorities can occur using the corporate response format found on this site under 'What can I do' Corps Appraisals now provide a more thorough assessment based on mission priorities.

Some corps will be planning to involve members in a corps 2020 workshop or summit and developing their local mission strategy. In some cases completely new directions may be needed.

Healthy Corps training modules (in a DVD format) will be available in 2010 to offer training and preparation for those leading and managing change  Targeted support will also be provided.

Joining up Corps and Social Services

Corps and social mission are working together well in many places. Case studies will aim is to help people across the territory to see that “we can do it, even if it might look different where I am”.

Support will be given to facilitate the linking up of leadership teams from corps and community/social services to develop an area/geographical-based approach to mission strategy and ministry.

In some places, small groups from corps could be more actively linked to social and or other services (e.g. Employment Plus agencies, the local Salvos Store).

Looking to the Future

The Salvation Army in Eastern Australia will be moving with the times. The Gospel message doesn’t change, yet our methods of communications, resources, approaches and plans do. They must do if we are to continue to grow.

“The way forward for us is to look back at our history to acknowledge and embrace that history and move forward with both clarity and certainty of who we are as a people of God and what God has equipped us and lead us to do” (Salvationist writer and theologian Dr Roger Green).

It is time to embrace an exciting new era of opportunity through our response to the Mission Priorities.
